It’s a story of malt meeting ginger on a dry summer night. You can smell the citrusy sawdust and oozing sap from the freshly cut trees now lying on the forest floor. The forest speaks through these leaves, with light zest and citrus of the ginger and some sourness of the tea to cut through the thick malty corpus. I have to say, for what it is, I’m impressed. Canarias has always been a solid go-to gaucho yerba, but I must admit that I’ve grown far away from it’s somewhat banal character over the years. Canarias has never been known for yerba that pops out of the gourd with explosive flavors. Instead, it has remained steady and fixed with reliable malt delivery, even here with the ginger and green tea blend. The Old World flavors of rich malt ring strong here. It’s obvious that a blend like this was targeted at their same longstanding audience of customers who’ve grown up with the brand, now trying to elevate their palates to something more fresh and vibrant. But the company still falls short of reaching a broader audience that’s seeking more risk in their blends. The safety is easily tasted. No risks were taken. Nevertheless, we have a beautiful blend that adds levity to the Canarias lineup of medium-full body yerbas grown with high standards in Southern Brazil for the Uruguayan market.
